Chiropractic Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Why should I see a Chiropractor? The better question to ask is "Why Wouldn't You see a Chriorpactor"?
Becoming a chiropractor is a demanding and highly rewarding path that includes a minimum of 4,500 hours of intense academic study including classroom learning, clinical science and internship training.
The spine is the most common site of nervous interference because nerves travel from the spinal cord through openings on either side of the spine to get to all of your cells and organs. The customized care you receive from your chiropractor can help to improve your posture, muscle balance and mobility. More importantly, it can restore the integrity of your nervous system and aloow the body to function at its optimal capacity.
To detect the possible onset of a VSC, your chiropractor will conduct a thorough examination, including a detailed history, orthopaedic, neurological and postural evaluations, and possibly an X-ray (radiographs) if he or she deems these to be necessary to fully assess your condition. Do I have a slipped disc? Between each pair of spinal bones is a disc. Its fibrous outer ring holds in a jelly-like material. This soft center serves as a ball bearing for joint movement. Because of the way a disc attaches to the spinal bones above and below it, it can't actually slip. However, a disc can bulge. It can tear. It can herniate. It can thin. It can dry out. And it can collapse but it can't slip. Do I have a pinched nerve? An adjustment is the main method of treatment used by your chiropractor. It is a specialized, controlled and safe pressure applied to your spine to restore the proper motion and position of your vertebrae and facilitate the correction of nerve interference. It is a precise procedure that your highly skilled chiropractor has learned and perfected over years of training at a Chiropractic College and in clinical practice. Every health procedure, from taking aspirin to giving blood, involves a level of risk. Chiropractic adjustments are among the safest of all health care interventions because they are non-surgical, drug-free and present an extremely low risk. Compare the statistics. A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are "remarkably safe." By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record. A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited. What is "THE POP" that occurs with an adjustment? The audible sound heard during some manual adjustments is caused by the rapid release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, that is compressed in the joint fluid - NOT bones hitting each other or breaking. When the joint is decompressed the pressure inside the joint changes and the gas is released, similar to opening a soda can for the 1st time or cracking your knuckles. The sound is interesting, but isn't a guide to the quality or value of the adjustment. Is chiropractic effective? How long will it take to get better? Many drug treatments (by MD) are prescribed for a lifetime yet they are not designed to correct the problem, only to keep the symptoms in check. It takes 1-3 years for braces to move teeth which are held inplace by small ligaments. Chiropractic adjustments can not be expected to undo years of dis-ease / damage in a single visit, it doesn't work that way. The length of your recommended care depends on: the degree of vertebral misaligment, phase of spinal degeneration your age, your general health. Some patients experience almost instant relief. Others discover it can take many weeks or months. Many factors can affect the healing process. How long have you had your problem? Are you keeping your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Do you smoke? Are you in otherwise good condition? Within a short period of time most patients sense enough progress to fully complete their doctors recommendations. The number of adjustments varies with each patient and their individual health goals. In chronic cases, complete healing can take months or even years . Do many people see chiropractors? There are at least 25 million people who are enjoying the non-surgical, drug-free healing nature of chiropractic, each year. Most chiropractic patients experience real relief and improved general well being, and continue to make regular visits a part of their healthy lifestyle choice and to keep them in peak condition. From professional athletes to homemakers, engineers to electricians, newborns to seniors, chiropractic care has been the answer to optimum health. Here are a few of the people who use Chiropractic Care to optimize their performance: Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, Emmitt Smith, Jay Bell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbo, Evander Holyfield, MEl Gibson, Richard Gere, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Mary Lou Retton, Bruce Jenner, Jimmy Connors, Montel Williams. Chiropractic for Children? Studies have shown that newborn infants often enter the world with spinal trauma due to the birth process. Robert Mendelsohn, MD discussed in his book "Confessions of a Medical Heretic" that babies born in hospitals are 6X more likely to suffer distress during labor and delivery, 8X more likely to get caught in the birth canal, 4X more likely to need resuscitation, 4X more likely to become infected and 30X more likely to be permanently injured than babies delivered / born at home. A 1987 study published in the German medical journal "Manual Medizin" found that over 1000 (out of 1250) suffered from nerve interference 5 days after birth. This caused a variety of clinical conditions ranging from central motor impairment to lowered resistance to infections, especially those of the ears, nose and throat. Other studies have shown that children under regular chiropractic care get sick less often and less severely, rarely miss days from school, have fewer emotional and learning disabilities, and other neurologic problems connected with childhood than their medically treated counterparts. The director of Pyschoeducational and Guidence Services of College Station, Texa noted that out of 10,000 hyperactive children referred to him, those that showed the most improvement had received chiropractic care. Some childhood conditions that have responded well to chiropractic care: fever, colic, croup, wheezing, asthma, cough / colds, bronchitis, sinus problems, "growing pains" Chiropractic Care for the elderly? There are over 43 million people aged sixty living in the United States making up 16.7 % of the population. This 16.7 % of the population consumes: 33.3% of all tranquilizers, 50% of sleeping pills, 33.3% of antidepressants, 65% of high blood pressure meds, 84% of blood vessel dilating drugs, 43% of gastrointestinal drugs, 33% of all arthritis drugs. World Health Organization statistics show that: 88% of all people had one problem with a prescribed drug, 22% had a possibly life-threatening condition perhaps caused by medication, 59% were given drugs that were either ineffective or contr-indicated, 28% were given an incorrect dosage, 48% were given drugs that had a severe interaction with other chemical, 20% were given drugs that had the same effect as other drugs they were already taking. The fact is that the elderly need chiropractic care. When the patient's nerve interference is reduced or eliminated, their life support systems are strenghtened and healing can occur naturally. NO - as the benefits of chiropractic adjustments gain credibility, more MD's and PT's are attempting to train themselves in manipulation techniques at weekend seminars. This inadequate training presents a real danger to the publics health and safety. MD's and PT's use "Joint Manipulation" - the forceful passice movement of a joint beyond its active range of motion. It does not imply precision, specificity, or the correction of nerve interference, therefore, it is not synonymous with the Chiropractic Adjustment. Chriorpactic Adjustment - is the specific application of force to facilitate the body's correction of nerve interference. Chiropractors are the ONLY health care professional trained to detect and correct vertebral subluxation. Chiropractors have over 2000 hours of specific training in spinal and extremity adjusting. Will My Insurance Cover all My Recommended Care? Many people with plans such as yours think it will cover all the care they'll need. Insurance coverage is based on a "sick care model" and is designed to cover the bare minimum of visits. Basically they may cover your visits until you are out of pain but will not likely cover your corrective / wellness visits "wellness care model". Your policy may help pay for some of your care but not all. If you base the length of your care on your insurance coverage, you may be leaving your underlying problem (subluxation) the same therfore your current symptoms are likely to return, your spine may be more damaged over time, and our ability to help will be less. |
