HOW CAN YOU TELL?

Your spine is made of 24 moveable bones (vertebrae) that are stacked on top of one another and separated by a cartilage spacer (disc). The main function of the vertebrae is to protect the delicate spinal cord and nerves that branch from spinal cord and exit between each vertebrae (your lifeline - communication path between the brain and all body parts). Your nervous system controls and regulates every cell of your body. When your nervous system doesn't work right, you don't work right. And when you don't work right, you're sick! Because these 24 vertebrae are movable - minor and major impacts (birth process, slips, falls, car accidents, sports impacts, & daily repetitive postures)can cause the vertebrae to shift/misalign. When this occurs is causes spinal decay and more importantly SPINAL CORD / NEVRE PRESSURE. . Your body does not like nerve pressure and will attempt to correct this problem by causing you to shift your position. This shift will decrease the pressure on the nerve but will show up outwardly as a posture imbalance. If the posture imbalance is great enough it may produce uneven weight distribution. QUICK TESTS (To see you if your spine may be causing your pain / sickness. If the results indicate that you or a loved one is a good candidate for chiropractic care, contact COTTINGHAM CHIROPRACTIC to arrange a thorough examination in our office immediately.)

  1. STANDING POSTURE: stand in front of a mirror in a comfortable / relaxed postion. Look in the mirror: is your head tilted to one side, Is one shoulder higher than the other, is one hip higher than the other (do you have to hem your pant legs differently)? Another problem is Forward Head Posture (the ear hole is in front of the shouler). "FHP leads to long term muscle strain, disc herniations, arthritis, and pinched nerves." Mayo Clinic Health Letter, Vol. 18, #3, March 2000
  2. DUAL WEIGHT SCALES: on a level floor, stand on two scales (1 foot on each scale), have someone write down the weight under each foot then turn and repeat with feet on the opposite scale. Add the weight for the right foot and divide by two, then do the same for the left foot. See if the weght is more than 5# different side to side.

If you answered YES to any of these tests - contact COTTINGHAM CHIROPRACTIC for a more thorough spinal examination
